Water Quality Monitoring
Water quality monitoring outside the laboratory aims to obtain qualitative information on the physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of a water body. The traditional method of taking samples periodically is not only a cost intensive process, but one that takes snap shots only, with big unobserved periods in between. ADCON provides the tools to keep an eye on water quality – 24/7.

The objectives of a water quality monitoring program can be manifold. They range from plain monitoring of the environmental state of a water body to the detection of drinking water standard violations, from the analysis of temporary water quality trends to the observation of an industrial plant’s injection of waste water. Last not least maintaining and monitoring a certain water quality level is made compulsory by many national and international regulations such as the EEC’s “Water Directive” or the EPA’s “Water Quality Standards Regulation”.
Deteriorating quality of water, for whichever reason, can pose a major hazard to human health, aquatic live and entire eco-systems. Timely detection is of crucial importance to minimize and mitigate the impact of such events, and/or to determine the source of pollution. Particularly in rivers and streams short polluting events, such as illegal disposal of toxic wastes or excessive waste water loads, are nearly impossible to detect by taking samples. Timely detection of such events can help taking preventive action as the wave of pollutants moves downstream.
The situation is aggravated by the various parameters that need to be monitored. While for many cases simple indicators such as temperature and conductivity will suffice, in other cases more sophisticated parameters, such as pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), turbidity or blue algae content will need to be monitored.
ADCON can provide an attractive solution!
The proven ADCON data loggers A755 and A753 are compatible to a number of water quality sensors our partners can provide. For less demanding applications the OTT PLS-C sensor will provide data on level, temperature and conductivity. It is extremely easy to deploy, has a very long service life with low maintenance requirements and an attractive price.
For challenging environments we deploy one of the members of Hydrolab’s family of water quality sondes, which are measuring up to 16 parameters simultaneously. These Hydrolab multi-parameter sensors use an SDI-12 interface, through which the probe can actually be attached directly to all ADCON Series 4 RTUs supporting SDI-12.
Depending on the model chosen a vast array of sensors can be deployed, comprising of parameters such as
- Water temperature
- Conductivity
- pH/ORP
- Dissolved Oxygen
- REDOX potential
- Turbidity
- Blue Algae
- Ammonia
- Nitrates
- Chloride
- Total Dissolved Gas
- Chlorophyll
- Rhodamine
- Blue Green Algae
